Budapest Airport Guide (BUD)
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is Hungary's main international airport, located about 16 km southeast of the city center. It serves as the primary hub for both passenger and cargo traffic in the region.
City Center
There are several convenient options to reach downtown Budapest from the airport:
-
Bus 100E
This is a direct express bus to central Budapest. It stops at Kálvin tér, Astoria, and Deák Ferenc tér.
The service runs 24 hours every day. Buses come every 6 to 10 minutes during peak daytime, every 10 to 15 minutes in the early morning and evening, and every 30 to 40 minutes overnight. The journey takes about 35 to 45 minutes.
Tickets cost 2,500 HUF. You can buy them at airport ticket machines, at BKK customer service points, or via the BudapestGO app. If you have a Budapest public transport pass, a discounted add-on ticket for the 100E costs just 1,000 HUF.
-
Bus 200E and Metro M3
The most budget-friendly option. Take bus 200E from the airport to Kőbánya-Kispest metro station, then transfer to metro line M3 toward the city center. The total journey takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
A single ticket costs 450 HUF if bought in advance from a ticket machine or the BudapestGO app, or 600 HUF if bought from the driver. A 90-minute ticket (750 HUF) allows unlimited transfers and is the best value for this route.
-
Taxi
Official Főtaxi cars are available at the Terminal 2 ranks. The ride to the city center takes 25 to 40 minutes and costs between 11,000 and 16,000 HUF. Use our taxi fare calculator to estimate your trip.
-
miniBUD Shuttle
The official shared minibus service offers door-to-door transport to any address in Budapest. Prices start from about 2,500 HUF per person. You can book at the miniBUD counter in arrivals or pre-book online to reduce waiting time.
Terminals
Budapest Airport has two passenger terminals connected by the SkyCourt, a central area full of shops and restaurants.
Terminal 1 has been closed for regular passenger flights since 2012 and is now used only for charter and private flights.
All commercial flights operate from Terminal 2, which is divided into 2A for Schengen flights and 2B for non-Schengen flights. Both areas share the same building and are easily walkable.
Arrival Tips
-
Currency
ATMs are available in the arrival hall. Hungarian Forint (HUF) is the local currency.
Stick to ATMs attached to major banks like OTP or K&H, and avoid blue and yellow Euronet ATMs, which often charge high fees and give poor exchange rates. When the ATM asks you to choose between HUF and your home currency, always choose HUF. This lets your own bank handle the exchange at a much better rate.
-
SIM Cards
A Telekom counter is available on the arrivals level of Terminal 2B, open daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. It offers prepaid Travel SIM cards and phone accessories.
Airport prices are higher than in the city center. For the best deal, consider buying an eSIM online before your trip or visiting a phone store once you reach downtown.
-
Taxis
Only use the official taxi rank outside the arrival hall. Ignore drivers who approach you inside the terminal.
-
WiFi
Free WiFi called "bud:free wifi" is available throughout the airport, with a limit of 4 hours per device per day.
